Ipieca and its members have produced a number of resources designed to raise awareness of the issues surrounding climate change and the technologies and levers to tackle it, as well as a suite of practical guidance and tools to support the industry’s pathways to a net zero future.

Alternative energy: In 2020, Ipieca released Environmental and social good practice for the energy transition: A compendium of Ipieca good practices, which highlights Ipieca guidance and tools which can help alternative energy developers advance the environmental and social performance of their projects and operations, supporting these technologies to scale up sustainably.

CCUS: Ipieca’s 2020 CCUS webinar series focused on the aspects of CCUS with direct relevance to deployment in the oil and gas industry, specifically as an enabler of low-carbon hydrogen and more broadly, opportunities to contribute to deployment of CCUS at a large scale and its incorporation into revised Nationally Determined Contributions and countries’ mid-century strategies. 

As part of our efforts to raise understanding and help inform constructive discussion on CCS, in 2018 Ipieca held a workshop - Making CCS fly - that brought together more than 50 participants from across the oil and gas sector and expert communities to discuss the role, barriers and opportunities presented by CCS.

Flaring: In partnership with the World Bank Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership and IOGP, Ipieca produced the Flaring management guidance for the oil and gas industry. It provides a framework for flare management reduction for oil and gas operators, and advice for government and regulators on how to incentivize the use of associated gas instead of flaring. An updated version of the guidance will be released in November 2021.

Hydrogen: Ipieca's 2021 Hydrogen awareness brief examines the role of hydrogen in the energy transition, including its applicability to hard to abate sectors, explaining how the oil and gas industry can support the scale-up of this technology.

Low emissions pathways: Ahead of COP 22 in Marrakech Ipieca released a new paper, Exploring low emissions pathways, which explores the common elements and critical enablers of a low emissions future. Our 2019 brief Exploring low-emissions pathways for transport, identifies routes and enablers to reach a low emissions transport system.

Methane: In 2020, Ipieca brought together industry representatives, scientists, IGOs and regulators in a workshop to explore: the latest scientific understanding of methane; different methane measurement approaches; the regulatory landscape of several regions around the world; methane reduction voluntary initiatives; and country and company methane reduction targets, with the outcomes captured in a workshop report.

Ipieca’s Methane glossary supports the industry and other stakeholders in the use of consistent terminology, and improves confidence in understanding and managing methane emission sources to further improve performance in reducing methane emissions.

Operational efficiency: To support the industry to improve operational performance as a core step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and addressing climate-related risks, Ipieca and IOGP produced a web-based compendium of energy efficient technologies for the oil and gas industry.

Paris Puzzle: In the run up to COP21, Ipieca launched the Paris Puzzle, a series of papers intended to address what we see as key components of efforts to address climate change and demonstrate our commitment to meeting the challenge. Collectively, these papers highlight the fundamental role and contribution of the oil and gas industry in addressing the challenge of a transition to a low emissions future with papers including Meeting energy needs, Effective policy, Managing our emissions, Natural gas, and Carbon capture and storage.
