Ipieca and its members are committed to supporting the aims of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

Two of the eight Ipieca Principles, which are a condition of membership, are aimed at driving support for the UN CBD:

  • Support the aims of the UN Convention for Biological Diversity
  • Responsibly manage operational impacts on the natural environment and ecosystem services

Ipieca’s work on biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES) is underpinned by the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. Ipieca works to responsibly integrate the management of BES across the life cycle of oil, gas and alternative energy operations and mainstream the concept of BES issue management within operational practices and management systems.

Ipieca convenes biodiversity and ecosystem experts from across its member companies with stakeholders in UN, civil society and academic institution to share knowledge and develop industry good practice to support:

  • An environmental risk-based approach to managing biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES)
  • Mitigation hierarchy implementation
  • Nature positive across the industry

Ipieca has been working closely with UNEP-WCMC for 30 years to develop guidance and address key biodiversity and ecosystem services issues across the oil and gas industry. This relationship has been formalised through the development of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two organizations.

In 2021, Ipieca and IUCN signed an MoU with the objective to advance oil and gas companies’ environmental performance in the areas of biodiversity conservation and the transition to a lower carbon energy future.

Ipieca is also a founding partner of the Cross-Sector Biodiversity Initiative (CSBI) with the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) and the Equator Principles Association, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). The CSBI develops and share good practices related to biodiversity and ecosystem services in the extractive industries.

When the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) is agreed upon by all participating countries, Ipieca will work with its members to raise awareness of the GBF across the oil, gas and alternative energy industry, and provide the tools and supports to enable companies to operationalise the framework.
