Revision 2016

Most large, well-known oil spills have occurred in the marine environment rather than inland, however while some basic principles of oil spill response are the same no matter where oil is spilled, techniques for inland oil spill response operations require some degree of adaptation. This guide addresses the response phase of inland oil spill incidents, where actions are undertaken to ensure safety, minimize the immediate spread and threat of a spill and deploy techniques to clean-up spilled oil. Its principal focus is on spills in the aquatic environment, including freshwater rivers and streams, lakes and ponds, wetlands and estuarine water bodies and their associated shores and banksides. Some additional information on adjacent terrestrial environments is also included.
