Principle 2
Conducted with the context-specific stakeholders (‘right people’).

Example key performance indicators

Indicator 2.1: number of events/engagement activities hosted with stakeholders identified within the stakeholder engagement strategy/plan over a designated period

The KPI is a lagging indicator and seeks to understand the extent of engagement carried out over a designated period as it relates to the stakeholder engagement strategy/plan already prepared and implemented for the project/activity. The KPI should be informed by data collected as part of the stakeholder engagement process and cross-referenced against the contents of the strategy/plan.

Indicator 2.2: number of stakeholders engaged at events/engagement activities identified within the stakeholder engagement strategy/plan over a designated period

While Indicator 2.1 is a measure of the number of events, this KPI measures the total number of stakeholder engaged at these events. The intent is to understand whether the number of stakeholders engaged is commensurate with the extent of stakeholder engagement anticipated in the stakeholder engagement strategy/plan. The KPI is a lagging indicator and should be informed by data collected as part of the engagement process and cross-referenced against the strategy/plan.

Indicator 2.3: number of events/engagement activities hosted with disadvantaged or vulnerable groups over a designated period

The KPI allows for an understanding of what activities have been conducted with disadvantaged or vulnerable groups to provide a company with greater clarity in relation to the nature of engagement carried out with these groups (captured in Indicator 2.1) and whether these groups have been appropriately targeted by specific engagement techniques/tools. The KPI is a lagging indicator and should be informed by data collected as part of the stakeholder engagement process.

Indicator 2.4: number of events/engagement activities hosted with affected communities over a designated period

The KPI allows for an understanding of what activities have been conducted with affected communities to provide a company an understanding as to the extent of engagement carried out with this group. The KPI is a lagging indicator and should be informed by data collected as part of the stakeholder engagement process.

Indicator 2.5: number of disadvantaged or vulnerable stakeholders engaged over a designated period

The purpose of this KPI is to understand the total number of stakeholders engaged who identify as part of a disadvantaged or vulnerable group. The intent of the lagging indicator is to understand whether the events/engagement activities conducted for disadvantaged and vulnerable groups (refer to Indicator 2.3) is commensurate with those identified in the stakeholder engagement strategy/plan. The KPI should be informed by data collected as part of the stakeholder engagement process and cross-referenced against the strategy/plan.

LightbulbTip: It is important for companies and practitioners to cross-reference the stakeholders attending engagement events/activities with those identified in the stakeholder engagement strategy/plan. Where there are discrepancies, a review should be undertaken to understand whether the stakeholder identification/mapping requires updates. This is often an ongoing process to reflect changes in the stakeholder landscape as a project/activity evolves.
