The wellbeing of people and the environment is at the heart of what Ipieca does. While rare, spills can have long-term environmental and socio-economic impacts, so the risk of these occurring needs to be minimised and managed effectively.

Ipieca convenes industry experts from member companies and technical partners, including specialist response organisations, research bodies and other organisations, throughout the wider response community, and harnesses their collective expertise on spill prevention, preparedness and response.

We ensure incident responders, regulatory bodies and governments around the world have the most up-to-date guidance and tools to prevent, plan for and respond to spills. To date, Ipieca has developed almost 60 publicly available marine spill-related good practice guidance covering:

  • Strategy: frameworks on which to build preparedness and response plans
  • Planning: guidance to support the development of response plans
  • People: covering responder training and health and safety, oil spill exercises and volunteer management
  • Response: guidance on tools, technologies and good practices to support response operations offshore, shoreline and inland
  • Impact: guidance on dealing with impacts on marine life, shorelines and economic assessment and compensation

By sharing knowledge and good practice and working on coordinated preparedness and response, Ipieca helps to prevent spills and minimise the impact of a spill on the environment and people.
