Responsible security

This is due to the potential for disruptions - often triggered by poverty - such as conflict, labour unrest, lack of access to basic human needs, and other social factors. These issues can affect the livelihoods of local populations, employees or contractors, as well as cause costly delays to new projects and operations. Addressing such security issues proactively by developing and implementing operations that integrate responsible security helps ensure the safety and sustainability of the operating environment essential for business to be carried out successfully.

Ipieca helps companies to develop and implement responsible security operations through peer learning workshops and facilitating the exchange of experience and knowledge between security and corporate responsibility practitioners.

Ipieca is a permanent observer at the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPSHR). Established in 2000, the VPSHR are a set of non-binding principles designed to guide companies in maintaining the safety and security of their operations within an operating framework that encourages respect for human rights.

To support the coordination and continual implementation of responsible security practices, Ipieca collaborates with other organizations such as the International Finance Corporation (IFC), International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC), International Alert, and DCAF - Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance.
