The theme of the 2025 Annual Review is 'Accelerating industry’s contribution to a sustainable world'. It reflects the strategic intent introduced in Ipieca’s 2025-2028 Strategy, which aims to accelerate action underpinned by collaboration and shared understanding across the UN, business, finance and civil society.

The Review demonstrates how Ipieca is delivering on this strategic intent—from working with members and partners to develop good practice and share knowledge; increasing our emphasis on building capacity and regional outreach; and fostering an integrated approach to achieve a sustainable climate, flourishing biodiversity and thriving communities.

A summary of 2025 activities and resources across each of our strategic themes of climate, nature, people and sustainability is provided in the ‘Programme overview’ section.

A selection of key quotes and statistics from the Review have been pulled out below.

Selected quotes

Oil and gas are key pillars of the global energy system, providing a large share of the affordable, reliable and accessible energy needed to fuel economic growth and improve living conditions for all. It is therefore essential to explore, develop, produce, refine and supply petroleum resources in ways that lower emissions, expand access to energy and water, reduce poverty, strengthen resilience, and help protect nature and local communities.

Paul Krishna, Ipieca Chair (ExxonMobil)

Providing a platform to share knowledge, experiences and lessons learnt is a key part of what Ipieca does... A key reflection from 2025 is the value that collaboration and inclusion bring to our work. Looking ahead to 2026, we will continue to leverage our convening power - with an increased focus on the Global South - to support our guidance and capacity building to accelerate industry contribution to a sustainable world.

Brian Sullivan, Ipieca CEO

Ipieca’s contributions to the work of the IMO remain highly valuable as we develop the next set of regulations supporting energy and technology innovation in global shipping. By sharing technical expertise, Ipieca helps advance practical solutions and informed dialogue across the maritime and energy sectors. This partnership strengthens our collective efforts to deliver a cleaner, more sustainable future for international shipping.

Roel Hoenders, Head of Climate Action and Clean Air, International Maritime Organization

There are differing views within the conservation community on working with the energy industry, but constructive engagement is essential to ensure that this transition benefits nature and people. Through partnerships like this one, IUCN can play its role as a critical partner—promoting accountability, transparency and meaningful progress toward sustainability.

Stewart Maginnis, Deputy Director General, International Union for Conservation of Nature

As we build on the success of the first year of this strategic cycle, Ipieca will continue to support its members and the broader industry to navigate the energy transition in a way that delivers for people, planet and nature. Our focus includes expanding our engagement with the Global South, fostering an integrated approach to sustainability, expanding our peer-to-peer workshop offerings, and developing new collaboration opportunities.
