One of Ipieca’s core roles is to support UN conventions and agreements. We provide technical inputs to these when requested, raise awareness and support as well as develop good practice guidance which enables the oil, gas and alternative energy industry to contribute to them.

UN conferences, meetings and forums

UNCBD Regional Africa Business & Biodiversity Forum

Ipieca supported and took part in this UN Convention on Biological Diversity convened forum to highlight practical tools and sector-specific solutions that can accelerate biodiversity mainstreaming.

Ipieca Nature Director Artemis Kostareli participated in the session on mainstreaming biodiversity in the energy sector.

IMO technical seminar on marine biofuels

This International Maritime Organization (IMO) seminar covered biofuels state of play, production, certification, market dynamics and onboard experience.

As an observer of the IMO, Ipieca helps the IMO to assess the science surrounding proposed changes to the marine fuel developments, including marine spill and a greenhouse gas reduction focus.

Guidance to drive action on UN conventions

This webinar series shares knowledge and good practice around the scaling up of this technology, including key issues, environmental responsibility, financial incentives, policy, and liability concerns.

UN convention the series aligns with:

The IPCC Sixth Assessment Report highlights CCS as one of the key technologies that could enable a low-carbon energy transition. CCS supports the Paris Agreement by enabling decarbonisation of oil and gas and hard to abate sectors as well as supporting the removal of atmospheric CO2.

Watch

Ipieca hosted a virtual webinar series on practical abatement technologies and case studies to help operators understand detection, quantification and reduction of methane emissions, focused on the Latin America operational context.

UN convention the series aligns with:

Reducing methane emissions is critical to achieving the Paris Agreement’s climate goals, as methane is a powerful greenhouse gas responsible for significant near-term warming.

Ipieca raises awareness of UN days among its members and through its external channels, sharing good practice guidance which aligns with the themes of these days.

This quarter we promoted:

UN World Water Day

Ipieca shared guidance to help companies to proactively identify and manage potential water risks and issues.

Ipieca Principles - what we stand for

The Ipieca Principles outline a shared ambition for members in support of Ipieca’s vision, which is reflected in our 2025-2028 Strategy, across the four themes of climate, nature, people and sustainability.

Each theme includes two principles: the first drives support for a UN convention or initiative, the second advances the environmental and social performance of member companies' operations.

  • Climate
    Chevron-down
    1. Support the Paris Agreement and its aims.
    2. Advance emissions reduction and innovation and enable adoption of low-carbon products and solutions across oil, gas and/or alternative energy.
  • Nature
    Chevron-down
    1. Support the aims of the UN Convention for Biological Diversity.
    2. Responsibly manage operational impacts on the natural environment and ecosystem services.
  • People
    Chevron-down
