One of Ipieca’s core roles is to support UN conventions and agreements. We provide technical inputs to these when requested, raise awareness and support as well as develop good practice guidance which enables the oil, gas and alternative energy industry to contribute to them.

UN conferences, meetings and forums

UNECE Sustainable Energy Week 2026

Ipieca attended the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Sustainable Energy Week 2026 in Geneva, which brought together governments, international organisations, industry, academia and civil society to discuss pathways towards secure, affordable and sustainable energy systems.

Alongside the plenary sessions, Ipieca participated in the 13th session of the UNECE Group of Experts on Renewable Energy (GERE 13), as well as the IUCN-UNECE Workshop on Biofuel Sustainability.

IMO Research and Development Forum

Ipieca participated in the IMO Research and Development Forum which brought together regulators, researchers, industry representatives and emergency responders from around the world to examine emerging preparedness and response challenges associated with the maritime energy transition. As fuels such as methanol, ammonia, hydrogen, liquefied natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas and biofuels become more widely adopted, it is important to ensure that governments, industry and response organisations are prepared to address any associated pollution risk.

IMO technical seminar on the use of ammonia as marine fuel

The seminar highlighted growing momentum behind ammonia as a potential marine fuel, with speakers demonstrating progress from pilot projects towards commercial deployment. While substantial advances have been made in vessel development, fuel supply chains and regulatory frameworks, a consistent theme was that safety, crew competence and environmental stewardship must underpin wider adoption.

IMO expert workshop on chain of custody models fuel supply chain traceability

This workshop convened experts from governments, industry, certification bodies, standards organisations and academia to explore chain of custody (CoC) models for fuel supply chain traceability as part of the IMO’s work on sustainable fuel certification fuel life cycle emissions accounting.

Ipieca participated in the workshop, presenting practical examples from fuel supply chains that already operate under chain of custody and traceability requirements, drawing on experience from the EU Renewable Energy Directive and CORSIA framework.

Guidance to drive action on UN conventions

This joint Ipieca-Energy Institute-CIRIA report helps companies integrate circular economy principles into every stage of an asset’s life cycle. It provides practical guidance, tools and examples to support the transition from linear approaches to more circular, resource-efficient ways of designing, building, operating and decommissioning assets.

UN conventions the resource aligns with:

SDG 12 sustainable consumption, the Convention on Biodiversity and the Paris Agreement: circular economy adoption improves resource efficiency and can sometimes reduce the effects of primary resource demand on biodiversity and enable carbon emissions reduction and nature regeneration.

Download the guidance

The series brought together experts from across the CCS value chain to share insights, experiences and lessons learned across a range of topics relevant to CCS deployment and scale-up, including:

  • Social acceptance
  • CO2 enhanced oil recovery
  • Permitting to development
  • Sustainable development and derisking for CCS

UN conventions the resource aligns with:

CCS is one of the key technologies that could enable a low-carbon energy transition. CCS supports the Paris Agreement by enabling decarbonisation of oil and gas and hard to abate sectors as well as supporting the removal of atmospheric CO2.

Supporting UN international days

Ipieca raises awareness of UN days among its members and through its external channels, sharing good practice guidance which aligns with the themes of these days.

This quarter we promoted:

International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies 2026

Ipieca marked this UN day by sharing the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Spotlight report, which examines the economic benefits of combined air pollution and climate action as well as Ipieca resources to support the production and supply of cleaner, better performing fuels.

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

Ipieca raised awareness of the importance of Indigenous Peoples to advance climate action, environmental responsibility and social performance. We shared good practice guidance and resources for energy companies to support Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

Ipieca Principles - what we stand for

The Ipieca Principles outline a shared ambition for members in support of Ipieca’s vision, which is reflected in our 2025-2028 Strategy, across the four themes of climate, nature, people and sustainability.

Each theme includes two principles: the first drives support for a UN convention or initiative, the second advances the environmental and social performance of member companies' operations.

  • Climate
    Chevron-down
    1. Support the Paris Agreement and its aims.
    2. Advance emissions reduction and innovation and enable adoption of low-carbon products and solutions across oil, gas and/or alternative energy.
  • Nature
    Chevron-down
    1. Support the aims of the UN Convention for Biological Diversity.
    2. Responsibly manage operational impacts on the natural environment and ecosystem services.
  • People
    Chevron-down
    1. Support the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
    2. Promote the health, wellbeing and social inclusion of workforces and local communities relating to operations, and contribute to the social and economic development of host communities and countries.
  • Sustainability
    Chevron-down
    1. Support the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as embodied by the Sustainable Development Goals.
    2. Integrate sustainability across activities, increase transparency and engage with key stakeholders.

This document provides context and information on the principles, their implementation and governance, and includes a toolkit of practical examples, useful resources and reference points to help members support the principles.
