The April edition highlights the ongoing role for natural gas in the energy transition and features new ventures to turn carbon dioxide into rock, organic waste into biofuels, and municipal waste into clean hydrogen. We also share how Ipieca is supporting the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and COP27 Sharm el Sheikh objectives, and the lowest levels of gas flaring since 2010.

ADNOC
ADNOC commences drilling operation to turn carbon dioxide into rock
ADNOC has commenced a pilot project to demonstrate how CO2 taken from the atmosphere, when mixed with seawater and injected into peridotite rock formations underground, will react with the peridotite rock to mineralise it safely and permanently.

Major report finds gas and carbon capture and storage critical to net zero
Analysis undertaken by the University of Queensland, University of Melbourne and Princeton University highlights the importance of gas and carbon capture and storage for Australia’s journey to net-zero, says APPEA. The Net Zero Australia report echoed findings from the IEA and IPCC, showing that natural gas and oil products play a significant role in all energy transition scenarios.
The role of natural gas in the energy transition for Latin America and the Caribbean
A report from ARPEL, the IGU and the Latin American Energy Organization illustrates the complexity of the energy transition for Latin America and the Caribbean, exploring the role and critical drivers for the development of natural gas as a transition fuel, promoting sustainable socio-economic development for a growing population whilst contributing to climate targets.
The Cepsa Bio-Oils joint venture plans to create southern Europe’s largest second-generation biofuels facility in Huelva, Spain. The plant will produce 500,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel annually, using agriculture residue and used cooking oils as feedstock.
Floating wind turbine to supply power for CNOOC facilities
Electricity generated from the Haiyou Guanlan floating wind farm will be sent via a five km subsea cable to CNOOC’s Wenchang oil complex, helping to reduce CO2 emissions by 22,000 tonnes per year.
Idemitsu Kosan to explore clean hydrogen production from waste
In April, the company started a feasibility study of clean hydrogen production in Japan generated from waste. It aims to launch a hydrogen production facility by 2030 capable of processing 200-300 tonnes of waste per day.
Europe’s largest contracting package for security of supply, energy transition and climate protection
Contracts signed between transmission system operator TenneT and four cooperation partners, including McDermott, will develop the North Sea as a hub for sustainable and independent European energy production. The €30 billion agreements will secure resources needed to build grid connections for offshore wind farms in the North Sea, which will generate as much as electricity as 28 large-scale power plants.

Ipieca joins TNFD pilot partner programme
Ipieca is supporting the TNFD as a new piloting programme partner providing global oil and gas industry technical input to the beta framework, ahead of its launch in September 2023. The TNFD framework aims to support enhanced disclosure on nature-related risks and opportunities and direct financial flows towards nature-positive outcomes.

As an UNFCCC observer, Ipieca has attended every climate COP event since the first one was held in Berlin in 1995. Ipieca works with its members to produce guidance and tools to support the industry contribute to the COP objectives.
World Bank’s Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership (GGFR)
Global gas flaring falls to lowest level since 2010
Global gas flaring volumes fell in 2022 by around 3 per cent (5 billion cubic meters), the lowest level since 2010, equivalent to taking three million cars off the road. The satellite data compiled by the GGFR shows that global flaring intensity also fell to its lowest level since satellite tracking began.
