The August round-up celebrates the Northern Lights project’s successful first injection and storage of CO2, and shares a new Scope 3 environmental value trading scheme which promotes sustainable aviation fuel. Arpel and CBHE sign a memorandum to promote cooperation and sustainable energy development
Arpel and the Bolivian Chamber of Hydrocarbons and Energy (CBHE) have signed a ten-year memorandum of understanding to foster technical and institutional cooperation in the energy sector. The agreement aims to support inclusive and sustainable energy development in Bolivia and the wider Latin American region through joint initiatives, knowledge exchange, and collaborative events.
Polar Tankers Inc., a subsidiary of ConocoPhillips, has launched a shore power initiative to retrofit its fleet with high-voltage shore connection systems, allowing vessels to shut down diesel engines while docked and significantly reduce emissions. This aims to improve air quality and environmental stewardship at the Port of Los Angeles/Long Beach.
Phase 1 successfully completed of initiative to promote SAF use
ENEOS Corporation and its partners have successfully completed Phase 1 of an initiative involving establishing a Scope 3 environmental value trading scheme to promote the use of sustainable aviation fuel at Narita Airport. The demonstration confirmed the effectiveness of a platform which enables multiple companies to trade Scope 3 environmental values transparently, with plans to expand participation and further decarbonise aviation operations.
Energy Resources Aotearoa and Electrical Engineers Association launch industry workforce survey
Energy Resources Aotearoa and the Electricity Engineers’ Association have launched a nationwide workforce survey to inform strategic planning and investment across New Zealand’s energy sector. As part of the Re-Energise 2025 initiative, the survey aims to identify workforce gaps, training needs, and future skills to support the sector’s transition, ensuring a resilient and well-equipped energy workforce.
The first volumes of CO₂ have successfully been injected and stored in a reservoir 2,600 metres under the seabed, marking a major milestone in global carbon capture and storage efforts. The Northern Lights project, a joint venture between Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies, is the world’s first cross-border CO₂ transport and storage facility. The facility will initially store 1.5 million tonnes of CO₂ annually beneath the North Sea, with plans to expand capacity and support the decarbonisation of European industry.

Woodside extends research collaboration on West Australia’s unique marine biodiversity
Woodside Energy has extended its 28-year partnership with the Western Australian Museum and the Foundation for the WA Museum for another five years to continue marine biodiversity research along the Gascoyne coastline. The collaboration has already led to the discovery of over 700 new species and will now focus on examining legacy collections to guide future conservation and scientific efforts.
IMO launches new Regional Presence Office to boost maritime cooperation in the Pacific
The International Maritime Organization has launched a new Regional Presence Office in Suva, Fiji to strengthen maritime cooperation, safety, and sustainability across Pacific Island nations. This office will support regional implementation of global maritime standards, promote environmental protection, and assist Small Island Developing States and Least Developed Countries in tackling challenges like pollution, decarbonisation, and regulatory compliance.
World Bank Group strengthens procurement requirements to support job creation, skills development
The World Bank Group is updating its procurement rules to require that companies working on international civil works contracts funded by the Bank—such as construction and maintenance of transportation and energy infrastructure—allocate at least 30% of labour costs to local workers, starting September 1, 2025. This aims to boost job creation and skills development in developing countries.
