ENEOS
Industrial cluster project advances carbon capture in Japan
ENEOS and five partner companies have been selected by the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) to undertake design work for a shared CCS value chain in the Mizushima industrial area. The project will assess facilities for CO₂ separation, liquefaction, storage and shipping, with the aim of lowering costs through shared infrastructure. The proposed cluster could handle approximately 3.43 million tonnes of liquefied CO₂ annually, making it one of the largest CCS transport initiatives currently being developed in Japan and supporting the country’s broader green transformation ambitions.
The Eni Foundation, working with Mexican Institute of Social Security for Welfare, has inaugurated two healthcare facilities in the Mexican state of Tabasco. The initiative forms part of a wider programme to improve primary healthcare services, particularly maternal and child health. The project has also supported healthcare worker training, provided equipment to hospitals and clinics, and delivered community awareness programmes focused on nutrition, disease prevention and public health monitoring.
Developing carbon transport infrastructure for large-scale CCS
ExxonMobil is developing an integrated carbon transport network along the US Gulf Coast designed to connect multiple emitters, storage sites and CO₂ users. Described as a ‘carbon superhighway’, the system would provide greater flexibility than traditional point-to-point CCS infrastructure by enabling captured CO₂ to be directed towards permanent storage, enhanced oil recovery or industrial applications.
Supporting sustainable waste management through youth engagement
Pertamina and the DKI Jakarta Provincial Environmental Agency collaborated to promote sustainable waste management during Indonesia’s 12th National Jamboree. The collaboration saw the provision of a soil drilling machine for the construction of biopore holes to support organic waste management, improve water absorption and reduce waste ending up in landfills, as well as environmental education for 24,000 participants.
Local content recognition for offshore security initiative
Sonangol was recognised for its contribution to local content development during the launch of the MV Malongo vessel in Luanda. Built by national shipbuilder Kianda Estaleiros Navais and operated by Teleservice, the vessel will provide services to Sonangol’s exploration and production activities. The partnership was established to strengthen offshore installation security through nationally developed solutions.
Parties to the UN CBD met in Nairobi for the 28th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice and the 7th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation. Discussions covered protected areas, sustainable wildlife management, biodiversity finance and implementation of the GBF. The meetings advanced recommendations ahead of COP17 in Armenia, where governments will undertake the first global review of progress towards the framework’s 2030 biodiversity targets.
The Voluntary Principles Initiative has established a new in-country working group in Papua New Guinea to strengthen implementation of the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights. Bringing together representatives from government, industry and civil society, the group will provide a platform to address security and human rights challenges associated with extractive industry activities in the region.
Updates from the Ipieca-IMO Global Initiative H1 2026
The Global Initiative is a joint programme for strengthening national structures and capacity for oil spill preparedness and response across Africa, South East Asia and the Caspian Sea, Black Sea and Central Eurasia regions. Highlights from the past 6 months include facilitating national workshops and assessments, providing technical input and support for National Contingency Plans and exercise planning, and partnering/presenting at regional industry events.
