The Ipieca sustainability article round-up showcases recent sustainability-related achievements, projects and news from Ipieca members, demonstrating their support for the Ipieca Principles around advancing environmental and social performance across the energy transition. We also highlight initiatives from our partner organizations and share insights from key United Nations meetings.
The February round-up demonstrates Ipieca member leadership in sustainability through formal recognitions, pioneering projects—including a modular carbon capture plant and an urban waste to renewable methanol plant—and environmental and social investment programmes aimed at improving water quality, enhancing community resilience and supporting technical education for a just transition. Eni and AICS sign MoU to enhance technical education in Egypt
Eni and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) have signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance technical education in Egypt through the ‘Energize ATS: Improving Technical Education and Job Prospects for Youth in Egypt’ programme. The initiative aims to improve the quality of technical education by addressing labour market needs and fostering green and digital transitions, within the framework of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
GeoPark progresses Caribayona sewers and wastewater treatment plant
GeoPark and the Villanueva Mayor’s Office are nearing the completion of a basic sanitation project in Caribayona, Villanueva, which includes a new sewerage system and domestic wastewater treatment plant. This project, financed through GeoPark’s mandatory environmental investment, is 92% complete and will benefit over 1,300 inhabitants by improving water quality in the Tua river basin and enhancing health conditions and local ecosystem conservation.
Moeve receives Henkel supplier award for its contribution to renewable feedstocks
Moeve has been awarded the Henkel Sustainability Award 2024 for its significant contributions to decarbonisation in the detergent industry and the promotion of good environmental practices. The award recognises Moeve's development of a surfactant partially made from renewable raw materials, and highlights the company's efforts in promoting the use of sustainable raw materials in the industry.
SLB Capturi launches first modular carbon capture plant
SLB Capturi has successfully powered up its first modular carbon capture plant at Twence’s waste-to-energy facility in Hengelo, Netherlands. SLB’s modular ‘Just Catch’ design reduces onsite installation and outfitting work, and is designed to capture up to 100,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, which will be used in applications for the horticulture and food and beverage sectors.
Repsol to invest EUR 800 million in the first urban waste to renewable methanol plant in Europe
Repsol is investing over EUR 800 million in the Tarragona Ecoplant, a project in Europe aimed at producing renewable methanol from urban waste. The project, which has received funding from the European Union's Innovation Fund, is expected to create 2,800 jobs during its construction phase, and 340 when it begins operations, significantly boosting economic growth and employment in the Tarragona area.
The Woodside Social Investment Programme, in partnership with Wetlands International, is enhancing community resilience in Senegal's Fatick region through ecosystem restoration, environmental conservation, and climate adaptation efforts. The initiative empowers local communities, particularly women, by providing resources, training and tools for sustainable practices in activities which contribute to financial independence and environmental conservation.
IUCN launches working paper on advancing human rights-based approach to GBF Target 3
The new working paper explores concepts, considerations, and approaches to advance human rights in the context of area-based conservation, providing a practical resource for actors involved in implementation of Target 3 of the Global Biodiversity Framework. It aims to transform power relationships, ensure human rights norms are upheld in conserved areas, and enhance rights and equity in governance and management.
OGCI launches methane library to help reduce emissions
A new methane library collated by OGCI includes over 150 resources from a number of external organisations including the IEA, the World Bank, UNEP and Ipieca. Consolidating and streamlining these resources helps make them more accessible to oil and gas companies who are at different stages of tackling methane emissions at their operations.
The joint Global Initiative programme assists countries to develop national structures and capability for oil spill preparedness and response. Recent activities include the 10th GIWACAF regional conference in Togo, a regional plan of cooperation for oil pollution incidents in the Caspian Sea, a regional workshop in Bangkok on guidelines for chemical dispersant use in the Gulf of Thailand, and much more.
The May round-up showcases members’ commitment to support the local communities where they operate including flood relief support, fund raising for local non-profits, scholarships and internships. We also cover progress on biofuels, nature-based solutions and solar facilities as well as a partnership approach to assist industrial customers’ decarbonisation efforts.
