The February round-up shows strong momentum on energy efficiency, scaling low-carbon solutions, circularity and environmental performance.
Highlights include improving existing solutions like CCS, out-performing a freshwater withdrawal target, and reimagining supply chains for circularity. We also share the IPBES Business and biodiversity report, along with insights on how regional knowledge sharing can advance biodiversity action, and considerations for the private sector’s role in the post-2030 SDG Agenda.

New agreement to study and protect Caribbean ecosystems
Ecopetrol and José Benito Vives De Andréis Institute of Marine and Coastal Research have signed a new agreement continuing their collaboration to assess and protect ecosystems along Colombia’s Caribbean coast. The partnership will cover topics such as ecosystem dynamics analysis, seagrass characterisation, recovery of ancestral knowledge and strengthening of community nurseries, aiming to enhance conservation science and inform long‑term ecosystem management.
New global supply chain for renewable plastics in Sony products
Fourteen companies, including ENEOS, across five regions have created the world’s first global supply chain to produce renewable, high‑performance plastics for Sony’s audio‑visual products, using biomass resources and a mass balance approach. The initiative aims to cut reliance on virgin fossil‑based plastics while maintaining performance and enabling transparent tracking of greenhouse gas emissions across the supply chain.
ExxonMobil is progressing its carbon capture and storage (CCS) portfolio with its second active commercial CCS operation in Louisiana, building CCS momentum and progress in lowering emissions from carbon-intensive industries, including steel, fertiliser, methanol, power and data centres.
Moeve reduces freshwater withdrawal in its industrial parks
Moeve has reduced freshwater withdrawal at its industrial sites in water‑stressed areas of Spain by 21% compared with 2019, exceeding its original target under its Positive Motion strategy. Building on this progress, the company has set a new goal to cut water use by 25% by 2028 and extend these measures to future projects and sites worldwide.
Improving the efficiency of carbon capture systems
OMV’s Carbon Capture Innovation Center is reinventing conventional carbon capture by electrifying the most energy‑intensive step of the process, cutting energy demand while enabling circular use of captured CO₂ for synthetic fuels and chemicals. The technology aims to lower costs and enable wider industrial adoption of CCS as part of the company’s decarbonisation strategy.
Repsol installs second 100 MW electrolyser at Petronor
Repsol will install its second 100 MW renewable hydrogen electrolyser at the Petronor refinery near Bilbao, investing EUR 292 million to produce up to 15,000 tonnes of green hydrogen a year mainly for industrial use. The project, backed by EU and Spanish funding, is expected to cut CO₂ emissions by around 167,000 tonnes annually and be operational by 2029.

IPBES publishes Business and biodiversity report
IPBES, often called the ‘IPCC for biodiversity’, has published its Methodological assessment report on the impact and dependence of business on biodiversity and nature’s contributions to people (known as the Business and biodiversity report). It finds that businesses are central to halting and reversing biodiversity loss, but that many often lack information to address their impacts and dependencies, as well as the risks and opportunities relating to biodiversity and nature’s contributions to people. The report highlights more than 100 actions business, government, finance and civil society can take to help halt and reverse biodiversity loss.

Private sector’s role in the post‑2030 SDG agenda
What comes after 2030? Insights from a recent webinar explore how the private sector can continue to contribute to sustainable development, using innovation and supply‑chain reach to drive systemic change. Going forwards, businesses see opportunity for stronger collaboration between businesses, governments, and policymakers, supported by coherent and integrated policy frameworks that link climate, nature, and social goals.
International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
Regional knowledge exchange for accelerating biodiversity action
An initiative led by IUCN under the umbrella of the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership engaged stakeholders from 23 countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America in regional knowledge‑sharing aimed at encouraging replication of successful biodiversity restoration projects in support of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The initiative highlighted the benefits of building on existing case studies, strengthening regional networks, and enabling practical peer learning.
