The Ipieca sustainability article round-up showcases recent sustainability-related achievements, projects and news from Ipieca members, demonstrating their support for the Ipieca Principles around advancing environmental and social performance across the energy transition. We also highlight initiatives from our partner organizations and share insights from key United Nations meetings.
The October edition features the first green hydrogen corridor between southern and northern Europe, as well as solutions for the first carbon-free cement plant. Other highlights include how members are supporting national emissions reduction journeys and advancing regional just transitions. Baker Hughes
Supporting Egypt's emissions reduction journey
Ahead of COP27 in Egypt, baker Hughes has signed a memorandum of understanding with Egypt General Petroleum Corporation to drive a flare recovery initiative and support emissions reduction across the Egypt's upstream and downstream oil operations. Delivery has begun with the recent signing of a contract for deployment of Baker Hughes' flare.IQ technology at the state-owned APC Refinery in Alexandria.
Cepsa collaborates on first green hydrogen corridor between North and South Europe
Cepsa and the Port of Rotterdam will work together to establish the first green hydrogen corridor between southern and northern Europe, ensuring a green hydrogen supply chain between two of Europe's main ports, Rotterdam and Algeciras, as agreed in MoU signed by both parties.
Cheniere joins UNEP's Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0
American LNG producer Cheniere has joined the UN Environment Programme-led Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) 2.0, which aims to improve the accuracy and transparency of methane reporting in the oil and gas sector. Cheniere joins 14 other Ipieca members in the initiative, of which Ipieca is a supporting organization.
Through its subsidiary, INPEX Geothermal Ltd., INPEX has joined the Rantau Dedap Geothermal project located in Indonesia's South Sumatra Province, which produces 98.4 MW, equivalent to energy needs of 450,000 Indonesian households.
A report commissioned by Kosmos Energy has analysed future energy trajectories of the company's host countries Ghana, Senegal, Mauritania and Equatorial Guinea, as well as Nigeria. The report highlights the key role natural gas will play in meeting developmental goals, and the opportunity for Kosmos Energy to support their energy transitions.
Exploring solutions for first carbon-free cement plant
TotalEnergies and Holcim have agreed to collaborate on the decarbonization of a cement production facility in Belgium. The MoU will see the two companies assess various energies and technologies for the capture, utilization and sequestration of the facility's annual carbon dioxide emissions, equating to around 1.3 million tonnes.

IUCN leads project with Ipieca members to identify renewable energy good practices
A new collaboration between IUCN, The Biodiversity Consultancy, Fauna & Flora International, EDF Group and Ipieca members Eni, Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies will examine how to sustainably scale up wind and solar developments, whilst minimizing impacts on nature and people. The partnership will produce practical guidance and examples of best practice for the wider industry, investors and policy makers to consider.
SPE ATCE opens with the challenge of sustainability
The SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition opened on 3 October with a discussion on the challenges facing the oil and gas industry and its role in advancing a sustainable energy transition. Panellists included CEOs and Presidents from Ipieca member companies ExxonMobil, Oxy and SLB, and was moderated by Ipieca association member IOGP's Executive Director Iman Hill. Ipieca was represented by its Environment Director Ian Sealy who presented the Ipieca-World Bank GGFR-IOGP Flaring management guidance.
