Unlocking the vast potential of cross-border CCS in Asia Pacific
Asia‑Pacific is rapidly advancing cross-border carbon capture and storage (CCS), with nations like Japan, South Korea and Singapore capturing CO₂ while countries such as Australia, Indonesia and Malaysia offer storage capacity. Governments are currently developing bilateral agreements to enable CO₂ transport, targeting up to 3 gigatonnes of emissions per annum by 2050, with potential economic gains of ~USD 220 billion in GDP annually and 300,000 jobs by 2035.
Baker Hughes works with Halfaya on flare reduction in Iraq
Baker Hughes and Iraq’s Halfaya Gas Company will implement an innovative flare gas recovery system at the Bin Umar plant, aiming to capture up to 300 million standard cubic feet per day of flared gas—enough to power ~2 million Iraqi homes annually. The flared gas will be converted into treated gas, liquefied petroleum gas and condensate for domestic use and export.
Bayou Bend project aims to advance CO2 storage along the US Gulf Coast
Chevron, in partnership with Equinor and TotalEnergies, is advancing the Bayou Bend project, a major carbon dioxide (CO₂) transportation and storage initiative along the USA Gulf Coast. Spanning approximately 140,000 acres onshore and offshore in south-east Texas, the project aims to support regional industries in reducing carbon intensity.
Repsol pioneers industrial-scale production of 100% renewable gasoline
Repsol has successfully achieved the first industrial-scale production of 100% renewable gasoline at its Tarragona facility, launching ‘Nexa 95’ — a fuel compatible with existing gasoline vehicles that cuts net CO₂ emissions by over 70% compared to conventional gasoline, and will be available at up to 30 stations across Spain by year’s end.
OMV is piloting methane splitting through European collaborations to convert methane into two valuable components: clean hydrogen and solid carbon. The hydrogen can then be used as a low-emissions fuel for heavy industries, while the carbon can be refined into high-performance materials such as graphene, which can also used to decarbonise legacy materials like concrete, tires and cements, and used in solar cells and batteries.
TotalEnergies and Veolia join forces for the energy transition and a circular economy
TotalEnergies and Veolia have signed a memorandum of understanding to deepen their long-standing partnership in energy transition and circular economy. Their collaboration includes deploying drone-based methane detection at landfills, cutting freshwater usage by 20% by 2030, expanding waste water reuse, and scaling low-carbon energy for desalination plants.
Ipieca + ASEAN Council on Petroleum and Energy (ASCOPE)
Ipieca and ASCOPE sign energy transition MoC
Ipieca and ASCOPE have signed a memorandum of cooperation (MoC) which will see the two associations work together to drive regional support for energy transition roadmaps, the uptake of sustainability reporting and advancing environmental and social performance across operations and supply chains.
OGCI Annual Report shows continued progress on emissions reductions
OGCI’s 2024 Progress Report shows its 12 member companies, 11 of which are also Ipieca members, have cut upstream methane intensity by 62%, routine flaring by 72%, upstream carbon intensity by 24%, and overall Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 25% since 2017. Members also invested USD 30 billion in low‑carbon technologies in 2024, and are spearheading over 50 CCUS projects aimed at sequestering up to 500 million tonnes of CO₂ annually by 2030.
Taskforce on Inequality and Social-related Financial Disclosures
TISFD releases its Conceptual foundations discussion paper
TISFD has published its Conceptual foundations discussion paper for stakeholder review and input in late 2025. The paper, once finalised, aims to unify terminology and concepts for understanding and addressing social and inequality‑related issues in finance, laying groundwork for a disclosure framework on related impacts, risks, and opportunities. The beta disclosure framework is expected in Spring 2026.
New UN report calls for responsible financing and investment in energy transition minerals
A new report from the UNEP-hosted International Resource Panel highlights the need for responsible financing and governance in mining energy-transition minerals, to channel capital toward sustainable practices, ensure shared benefits, and meet rapidly growing global demand. It calls for integrating ESG standards, circular economy strategies and regulatory reform to support the energy transition while protecting communities and ecosystems.
