UNDP and ISO launch global standard for managing contributions to the SDGs
UNDP and ISO have launched ISO/UNDP 53001, the first international standard designed to help organisations systematically manage and measure their contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It provides a common framework for embedding the SDGs into strategy, governance and decision-making, with a focus on measurable action and continual improvement.

Global action under Minamata Convention reduces mercury use and trade
UNEP highlights progress under the Minamata Convention, with 153 countries now party to the agreement, mercury trade slowing, mercury-containing cosmetics banned and fluorescent lamps being phased out. Some small-scale gold mines are also shifting towards less toxic alternatives.
Oil & Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI)
OGCI members meet 2025 operational emissions ambitions
OGCI reports that its member companies met their collective 2025 upstream carbon intensity ambition, while maintaining methane intensity at 0.13%, well below the 0.20% target for a fifth consecutive year. Since 2017, members have reduced aggregate upstream operated methane intensity by 58% and Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions by 28%.

Ipieca insights from the IMO technical seminar on the use of ammonia as marine fuel and the IMO R&D forum
The two events from IMO highlighted growing progress towards alternative marine fuels, including ammonia moving from pilot projects towards commercial deployment, alongside advances in production, bunkering and vessel technologies. They also emphasised that wider adoption needs to be matched by stronger safety, environmental management, emergency preparedness, research and international collaboration to address the different risks associated with new fuels.

Ipieca insights from UNECE Sustainable Energy Week 2026
The event in Geneva brought together governments, international organisations, industry, academia and civil society to discuss pathways towards secure, affordable and sustainable energy systems. Ipieca participated in the 13th session of the UNECE Group of Experts on Renewable Energy, including discussions on biofuel quality and sustainability standards, and attended the IUCN-UNECE workshop on biofuel sustainability, which explored scaling opportunities while strengthening biodiversity protection, social safeguards and international cooperation.
The monthly Ipieca sustainability article round-up showcases recent sustainability-related achievements, projects and news from Ipieca members, aligning with the Ipieca Principles around advancing environmental and social performance across the energy transition. We also highlight initiatives from our partner organisations and share insights from key United Nations meetings.
