This series of fact sheets explores water use and stewardship across technologies and value chains relevant to the energy transition. It aims to support informed technology and project decisions, strengthen water stewardship and build resilience in an increasingly water-constrained world.

Ipieca has launched a series of five fact sheets exploring water use and stewardship across technologies and value chains relevant to the energy transition. The series covers natural gas, liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydrogen, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and cooling systems.

Why is this important?

Water is an essential component of energy operations, including lower-carbon technologies. As these technologies scale, effective water management can help reduce pressure on local water resources and communities, while strengthening operational resilience.

Who are the fact sheets for and how can they be used?

Developed for oil, gas and alternative energy practitioners, the fact sheets provide practical insights into:

  • Water demand and sourcing requirements

  • Water quality and waste water management considerations

  • Key risks, impacts and opportunities for improved water stewardship

Together, the fact sheets show why water considerations need to be assessed at project and location level. They also highlight opportunities to reduce freshwater demand through technology selection, alternative water sources, recycling, reuse and circular water management practices.

Download the series to support informed technology and project decisions, strengthen water stewardship and build resilience in an increasingly water-constrained world.
