The theme of this year’s Mother Earth Day ‘Invest in our planet’ is designed to encourage all parts of society - governments, businesses and people - to take nature positive actions to support the well-being of the planet and the life it supports.

Protecting and enhancing nature

Ipieca brings together members and external stakeholders to share knowledge and develop guidance and tools to protect the natural environment, minimise and mitigate risks and impacts from operations and products, and contribute positively to nature.

Mainstreaming biodiversity

We support companies to integrate the management of biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES) across the life cycle of oil, gas and alternative energy operations and embed the concept of BES issue management and the mitigation hierarchy within operational practices and management systems.

Ipieca’s work on BES is underpinned by the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Ipieca has had UN CBD observer status since 1994 and provided industry technical feedback to its Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), which was launched at COP15. Ipieca is now working with its members and stakeholders to support the wider industry operationalise the GBF.

A holistic approach to nature

Ipieca recognises the interdependence of nature, climate, people and the planet. Our strategic pillars of climate, nature, people and sustainability enable us to work on these issues in a holistic way, whilst the Ipieca Principles provide a shared ambition for members, maximising impact.

The Ipieca-WBCSD SDG Roadmap sets out SDG impact pathways across the interconnected systemic themes of climate, nature and people. The nature pathways include actions companies and Ipieca can take to take to embed circularity, nature-positive and natural capital concepts into operations to support a healthier planet.

Our guidance with OGCI on natural climate solutions (NCS) helps to ensure that NCS projects not only deliver climate change mitigation but also benefits to local ecosystems and communities.

Collaborating to amplify impact

Ipieca convenes a significant portion of the oil, gas and alternative energy industry with key partners and cross sector initiatives such as UNEP, UNEP WCMC, CSBI, TNFD and IUCN to share knowledge on emerging environmental issues, develop guidance and scale up nature action.
