Decommissioned platform transforms into reef
Chevron has turned its former Genesis Platform into an artificial reef for marine life. The project involved turning the spar, or hull, of the platform into a gathering spot for creatures like coral, tropical fish and anemones.

Oxy’s 1PointFive signs 25-year sequestration agreement with CF Industries
Under the agreement, ~2.3 million metric tonnes of CO2 will be captured annually from CF Industries and its joint venture partners JERA and Mitsui & Co.’s Bluepoint low-carbon ammonia production facility in Louisiana. The captured CO2 will be transported and geologically stored at 1PointFive’s Pelican Sequestration Hub.
Successful conclusion of UK’s first CO2 injection test for CCS
The test involved the injection of CO2 into a depleted natural gas reservoir in the UK’s Southern North Sea, marking a major milestone for Project Poseidon. This test proves that carbon storage can be a reality for depleted fields of the Southern North Sea and that it is possible to reuse petroleum production infrastructure.
New report enhances understanding of biodiversity in Alberta’s Oil Sands region
The Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) recently published its Regional summary on the status of land cover and biodiversity in the Oil Sands region, providing a data-driven assessment of ecosystem integrity in the region based on 20 years of monitoring data.
The Pertamina Sustainable Forest programme is a conservation and reforestation programme carried out through planting mangrove and terrestrial tree. Pertamina planted approximately nine million trees between 2018 and 2024, reducing carbon emissions by 222,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually.
Ipieca insights from the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee 83rd session
The IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) met for its 83rd session in person at IMO Headquarters in London where it approved the IMO Net-zero Framework, the first in the world to combine mandatory emissions limits and GHG pricing across an entire industry sector.
Ipieca insights from the 2025 Annual Plenary Meeting of the Voluntary Principles Initiative
In its observer capacity, Ipieca attended the 2025 Annual Plenary Meeting of the Voluntary Principles Initiative (VPI) in London. The annual meetings allow representatives from companies, governments and civil society to share experiences, learn and discuss ways to reduce the risks of human rights violations and abuse in security operations.
One of Ipieca’s core roles is to support UN conventions and agreements. In Q1 2025, Ipieca attended the IMO’s 18th meeting on reducing shipping GHG emissions, the Benelux-UNEP roundtable on cleaner fuels exports, and the 13th meetings of the ICAO Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection, plus published resources to support the Paris Agreement, the Global Biodiversity Framework, and SDGs 6 and 12.
The March round-up underscores the broad collaboration members are engaging in to advance the energy transition, including projects and funds supporting decarbonisation, nature-based solutions, biodiversity. Plus, partner updates on biofuels for decarbonising shipping, a mercury trade control initiative in Latin America, and insights from Ipieca's engagement with the IMO, UN CBD, and UNEP.
