The Ipieca sustainability article round-up showcases recent sustainability-related achievements, projects and news from Ipieca members, demonstrating their support for the Ipieca Principles around advancing environmental and social performance across the energy transition. We also highlight initiatives from our partner organizations and share insights from key United Nations meetings.
We kick off the year with a round-up of initiatives and announcements from December and January, including biodiversity commitments for alternative energy projects, value chains for low-carbon hydrogen, carbon capture and storage infrastructure and social and economic development for Indigenous communities. We also share new nature positive commitments from the International Council on Mining and Metals and insights from Ipieca’s recent UN engagement.

Cepsa commits to improving biodiversity in its renewable projects
Cepsa has set new objectives to mitigate biodiversity impacts (no net loss) and promote actions to conserve and improve biodiversity (net positive impact) during the development and maintenance of its future wind and solar plants. The company will use methodologies for environmental assessment and monitoring and collaborate with external institutions to verify the results of its projects in biodiversity.

Equinor and RWE to cooperate on large-scale value chains for low-carbon hydrogen
Equinor and RWE have signed a memorandum of understanding with the aim to replace coal-fired power plants with hydrogen-ready gas-fired power plants in Germany, and to build production of low-carbon and renewable hydrogen in Norway that will be exported through pipeline to Germany.

PTTEP and INPEX to study carbon capture and storage in Gulf of Thailand
PTTEP and INPEX will conduct a study on the potential for carbon storage in the Northern Gulf of Thailand. The study supports PTTEP’s feasibility study for a CCS hub in the Eastern Economic Corridor of Thailand, which would reduce emissions from the company’s operational sites, as well as nearby industrial areas, through CCS technology.
