As COP29 took place in Baku during November, Ipieca members and partners have been busy announcing new climate actions, collaborations, innovations and progress. From turning carbon dioxide into rock, to offering carbon footprint of lubricant products, and investing USD 500 million to support SDG 7 (access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all), the November round-up showcases the collective efforts of our members to support the Paris Agreement and its aims.

ADNOC
CO2-to-rock technology shows promise in UAE pilot
ADNOC and carbon mineralisation startup 44.01 announced that their CO₂-to-rock pilot in the United Arab Emirates successfully converted 10 metric tonnes of CO₂ into rock within 100 days. They plan to scale up the project to inject 300 metric tonnes of CO₂, and work towards commercialising the technology.
Baker Hughes emissions abatement solution to reduce routine flaring at SOCAR’s Baku oil refinery
Baker Hughes has been selected to provide an integrated gas recovery and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) removal system to reduce routine flaring at SOCAR’s Heydar Aliyev Oil Refinery in Baku, Azerbaijan. The system is expected to recover up to 7 million normal cubic metres of methane per year and reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 11,000 tonnes annually.
bp, Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies join forces to help increase access to energy
bp, Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies have committed to a USD 500 million joint investment to support UN Sustainable Development Goal 7, which aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. This collaboration will focus on high-impact projects in Sub-Saharan Africa, South, and Southeast Asia to improve energy access and create co-benefits like job creation and improved health outcomes.
Cheniere publishes updated life cycle assessment study for GHG emissions intensities of LNG
Cheniere Energy has published an updated life cycle assessment (LCA) study for the greenhouse gas emissions intensities of its liquefied natural gas (LNG). This peer-reviewed study introduces a novel gas-pathing algorithm and integrates measurement data from Cheniere's facilities and collaborations, enhancing the accuracy of emissions tracking across the supply chain.
ENEOS becomes first company in Japan’s domestic lubricant industry to offer carbon footprint of products
ENEOS has developed a product-specific calculation system for carbon footprint of products (CFPs) for its lubricant and grease products. The company began providing CFPs to customers in October, making it the first company in the domestic lubricant industry to implement this service.
Eni awarded ‘Gold Standard reporting’ by UNEP for commitment to methane accountability
Eni has been awarded ‘Gold Standard reporting’ from the UN Environment Programme for its commitment to methane accountability. This recognition highlights Eni's efforts to report emissions at the highest data quality levels as part of the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0).
Southeast Asian energy companies call for just transition approach to methane emissions reduction
PETRONAS and other leading Southeast Asian energy companies have issued a joint statement at COP29, advocating for a progressive, collaborative, and inclusive approach to methane emissions reduction. This initiative aims to support a just energy transition that prioritises nature, people, and livelihoods.
TotalEnergies and Oil India collaborate on methane emissions detection and measurement
TotalEnergies and Oil India Limited signed a Cooperation Agreement to conduct methane emissions detection and measurement campaigns using TotalEnergies' AUSEA drone-mounted technology at oil sites in India. This collaboration aims to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of methane emissions monitoring and reduction efforts.
OGCI Progress Report: low-carbon investment rises as members’ total emissions continue to fall
OGCI's member companies have collectively invested nearly USD 100 billion in low-carbon technologies since 2017, achieving significant reductions in emissions, including upstream methane emissions by 55%, emissions from upstream flaring by 47%, and upstream carbon intensity by 21%.
Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter publishes its first report
The Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter has published its first Baseline Report, establishing a foundation to prioritise and track emissions reductions. This report marks a significant milestone, with 54 oil and gas companies, representing almost 45% of global oil production, committing to the Charter's ambition.
The biodiversity convention COP16 saw the launch of the Cali Fund to support fair and equitable sharing of benefits from digital sequence information on genetic resources, addressed invasive alien species as a major driver of biodiversity loss, and emphasised the role of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in biodiversity efforts. Ipieca hosted an official UNCBD event with Fauna & Flora and IUCN, organized its own on-site events and participated in other organizations’ events focused on supporting business to implement biodiversity actions.

COP29 delivered a new finance goal, finalised Article 6 on carbon trading and provided support for national climate adaption plans. Ipieca hosted an official side event with USCIB on private sector leadership on nationally determined contributions, and participated in panels hosted by the Malaysian Pavilion, Angolan Pavilion, Brazilian Pavilion and the World Liquid Gas Association.
Emissions management, carbon capture and storage, and low-carbon technologies take the centre stage in the October edition, alongside companies fostering research and development, and enhancing education and in-country value. We also share insights on how Ipieca and its members are supporting UN conventions, including the Global Biodiversity Framework.
