Responding to the continuous advancement of technology, Ipieca, IOGP, OGCI, and the Energy Institute have released an update of this guidance and online tool to help operators select and deploy methane detection and quantification technologies.

The four organisations collaborated on the project as eliminating methane emissions from the upstream oil and gas industry represents one of the best short-term opportunities for contributing to climate change mitigation and for advancing the goals of the Paris Agreement.

The report provides criteria that operators can consider in selecting technology, guidance on technology deployment, and examples of operators’ experiences with different technology combinations.

An online technology filtering tool, featuring detailed technology data sheets covering over 50 technologies and decision trees to guide technology deployment, has also been developed alongside the report. This enables operators to find the right technology for their specific needs.

The report acknowledges that there is no one-size-fits-all approach for technology, so provides operators with a framework and guidelines for selecting and deploying technologies that are tailored to their facilities and objectives.
