As we transition to a more sustainable future, alternative fuels and their associated products are becoming more prevalent in production, transport and use. Their safe handling and prevention of spills is a priority.

This widening range of alternative fuels and associated products (including low sulphur fuel oils, biomass-based diesels, liquified natural gas, hydrogen and ammonia) will behave differently to crude oils and traditional fuel oils when spilled in the marine environment.

Ipieca is working with a range of stakeholders to understand the safety risks they pose, how they will behave when spilled in different environments and scenarios, and potential response options. Ipieca provides fact sheets on these new fuels and products, is developing online emergency response toolkits and supports the International Maritime Organization with technical inputs to its work on alternative fuels.

Our work in this area will contribute to enhanced industry understanding of how alternative fuels and products will behave when spilled and how to respond quickly to protect people and the environment.
