One of Ipieca’s core roles is to support UN conventions and agreements. We provide technical inputs to these when requested, raise awareness and support as well as develop good practice guidance which enables the oil, gas and alternative energy industry to contribute to them.

UN conferences, meetings and forums

UNFCCC Bonn Climate Change Conference

Leading up to COP31 in Antalya, the UNFCCC Climate Conference in Bonn, Germany, provided an important opportunity to build momentum with international stakeholders and negotiators.

Guidance to drive action on UN conventions

This fact sheet explores key aspects of biofuels and explains the role of biofuels in the energy transition, outlining the main biofuel types, feedstocks and production pathways, as well as where and how biofuels are used across transport and other sectors. It also describes how biofuel sustainability is assessed.

UN convention the resource aligns with:

The Paris Agreement: biofuels can act as a lower-carbon fuel for hard-to-abate aviation and maritime transport sectors.

The Convention on Biological Diversity: promotes biofuels that use residues, microalgae or marginal lands rather than arable cropland. This helps to minimise habitat conversion and protect biodiversity.

Financing CCS projects is complex, with key challenges around high capital costs and the need to effectively derisk investments across the full value chain—from capture to transport and storage. This webinar offers perspectives around evolving financing models, increased collaboration and joint ventures that are shaping risk allocation, including financial mechanisms, government support and broader market trends.

UN convention the resource aligns with:

CCS is one of the key technologies that could enable a low-carbon energy transition. CCS supports the Paris Agreement by enabling decarbonisation of oil and gas and hard to abate sectors as well as supporting the removal of atmospheric CO2.

Supporting UN international days

Ipieca raises awareness of UN days among its members and through its external channels, sharing good practice guidance which aligns with the themes of these days.

This quarter we promoted:

World Oceans Day

Ipieca shared guidance to help companies manage and mitigate potential impacts around offshore operations and support the decarbonisation of shipping.

World Environment Day

Aligned with the day’s theme of ‘Act now for climate’, we raised awareness of guidance and resources to enable oil, gas and alternative energy companies to protect and enhance the environment and reduce emissions in support of climate action.

International Day for Biological Diversity

Ipieca promoted good practice guidance to enable energy companies to act on biodiversity and examples of positive change to inspire industry action.

International Mother Earth Day

Ipieca shared this day’s message on the importance of collaborative action to achieve harmony with nature along with select Ipieca nature related guidance and tools.

Ipieca Principles - what we stand for

The Ipieca Principles outline a shared ambition for members in support of Ipieca’s vision, which is reflected in our 2025-2028 Strategy, across the four themes of climate, nature, people and sustainability.

Each theme includes two principles: the first drives support for a UN convention or initiative, the second advances the environmental and social performance of member companies' operations.

  • Climate
    Chevron-down
    1. Support the Paris Agreement and its aims.
    2. Advance emissions reduction and innovation and enable adoption of low-carbon products and solutions across oil, gas and/or alternative energy.
  • Nature
    Chevron-down
    1. Support the aims of the UN Convention for Biological Diversity.
    2. Responsibly manage operational impacts on the natural environment and ecosystem services.
  • People
    Chevron-down
    1. Support the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
    2. Promote the health, wellbeing and social inclusion of workforces and local communities relating to operations, and contribute to the social and economic development of host communities and countries.
  • Sustainability
    Chevron-down
    1. Support the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as embodied by the Sustainable Development Goals.
    2. Integrate sustainability across activities, increase transparency and engage with key stakeholders.

This document provides context and information on the principles, their implementation and governance, and includes a toolkit of practical examples, useful resources and reference points to help members support the principles.
