A new initiative from the Centre for Carbon Research in Tropical Agriculture, Shell, and Petrobras—the ‘Carbon Countdown’—will travel across Brazil to collect soil and vegetation samples to quantify the carbon stocks of all Brazilian biomes. In its capacity as an observer, Ipieca participated in the 2026 Annual Plenary Meeting of the VPI, held in London from 24 to 26 March. Discussions focused on the Initiative’s role in responding to heightened security risks, evolving regulatory expectations and geopolitical tensions, and on its ability to mobilise companies, governments and civil society at both local and global levels.
