  • Consideration of issues concerning the production, distribution and bunkering of future marine fuels required to enable the delivery of the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy
Calendar12 February 2025

Ipieca, IBIA and OCIMF co-sponsored a submission to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) 83 regarding the 'Consideration of issues concerning the production, distribution and bunkering of future marine fuels required to enable the delivery of the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy'. The Canadian Fuels Association has supported the co-sponsors in the development of the ideas set out in this document.

The co-sponsors represent entities involved in the fuel supply chain across many sectors, including the maritime sector, covering production, distribution and bunkering. The submission summarizes aspects of their existing or future activities of significant importance for the decision-making process targeting the finalization and the approval of the mid-term GHG candidate measure(s) at MEPC 83.

The submission provides insights on the following themes:

  • Fuel producers and suppliers are part of the solution
  • Future measures should take into account cross-sectoral competition
  • The deployment of alternative fuels at scale requires time and funds
  • Bunkering and carriage of marine fuels face a unique challenge in setting up new operations

During the Intersessional Working Group on Reduction of GHG emissions from Ships (ISWG-GHG) 18 in February 2024, Ipieca and IBIA will participate in a side-event at the IMO in London. The side-event will take place Thursday, 20 Feb, 12:45-13:15.
